Europe joins forces to drive fusion energy forward
Brussels, October 1, 2024 – The European Fusion Association (EFA) has been officially established as an AISBL (International Non-Profit Association) in Brussels. The Deed of Incorporation was signed on September 24th, 2024, representing a significant step in the formalisation of the Association.
In June 2024, leading European companies joined forces to establish the European Fusion Association (EFA), a powerful new platform that will drive innovation and collaboration in the fusion energy sector throughout Europe. The primary objective of EFA is to accelerate the transition of fusion energy from research laboratories to large-scale industrial applications. This ambitious initiative requires a synergy of industrial expertise, entrepreneurial thinking, and a close cooperation between industry, science, investors, and politics. The association will pave the way for sustainable energy generation in Europe. EFA is welcoming new members to contribute to this vital cause and help shape the future of fusion energy.
The first Executive Board of EFA has been established and is represented by an array of European companies. Milena Roveda (Gauss Fusion) has been elected Chair of the EFA Executive Board. Anders Wulff (SUBRA A/S), Bernard Blanc (Assystem), Marianna Ginola (SIMIC), and Eric Giguet (Alsymex) have been elected as members of the Executive Board by a majority vote.
EFA will be supported in the day-to-day business by Frontiers in Energy Innovations (FEInn), a company founded by Tony Donné and Shweta Feher to advance nuclear fusion and foster collaboration across Europe. Tony Donné is one of the most well-known personalities in the European fusion arena having been EUROfusion’s Programme Manager until December 2023, and Shweta Feher complements this with her proficient background in project and stakeholder management and her organisational and networking skills.
A strong alliance for European fusion energy
As the association of European fusion energy companies and stakeholders, EFA aims to raise public awareness of fusion energy and attract interest from both public and private funding agencies. It is firmly committed to ensure energy independence for future generations.
“Fusion energy plays a crucial role in strengthening Europe’s strategic autonomy in clean energy. Our goal is to build a strong, world-class European fusion ecosystem that ensures a sustainable, long-term supply chain,” says Milena Roveda, Chair of the EFA Executive Board. “Fusion energy could bring a renaissance for European industry, bringing prosperity and jobs to our continent.”
Benefits for members
Joining EFA offers companies access to an integrated network spanning the entire value chain of the European fusion energy. By joining forces, members can explore new business opportunities and consolidate their presence in this rapidly growing market. As the primary point of contact for fusion energy stakeholders in Europe, EFA represents its members at European institutions, European governments, and appropriate international platforms. It promotes the exchange of knowledge and innovation and facilitates collaboration on joint development projects. Members benefit from close networking opportunities with leading companies and research institutions across the fusion energy sector.
Fusion energy: driving force for the European economy
The EFA considers fusion energy not only as a solution for achieving energy independence but also as a powerful engine for the European economy. With billions of euros invested globally and extensive funding plans from the European authorities, fusion technology holds the potential to create new industries and generate highly skilled jobs.
Furthermore, EFA is aware that despite a global investment of more than $7 billion in private fusion companies, less than 5% has been allocated to European-based companies, despite the fact that most of the industrial expertise and intellectual property of the fusion sector is located in Europe.
A strong and effective consortium of industry players is crucial for representing the sector’s interests to political decision-makers and positioning Europe as a global leader in fusion energy.
With the completion of the Deed of Incorporation, EFA has taken a significant step in its journey. The application for the Royal Decree granting legal personality to the association will be submitted in the coming days.
“Only through coordinated cooperation in Europe can the potential of fusion energy be exploited,” emphasizes Milena Roveda. “The EFA provides the framework to promote this cooperation and make the European industry competitive in the global energy transition.”
